Our Mission:

The mission of the AHYC Yachting/Cruising Committee is to sponsor events both on and off the water. To help bring new and seasoned, sail and power members together, to share past experiences & knowledge, and enjoy new adventures with fellow yachting club members that share your passion for time spent on the water. We believe that by participating in the various events sponsored by the Yachting/Cruising Committee you will enjoy your AHYC membership to the fullest.

How we achieve our Mission:

Each year as our membership continues to change, we reach out to all AHYC members, to join the Yachting/Cruising Committee, and to participate in our Jan/Feb annual planning meetings (in person, or by submitting your ideas via email) as we develop our event schedule for the season. In this way, we can be sure to adjust our schedule each season to best accommodate our Club members’ desires for the cruising season ahead.

Sample Schedule:

  • Season kick off Bar-B-Que at the AHMM this event is open to all AHYC members as well as all tenants of the AHMM. This is a great opportunity to meet club members, catch up with old friends, share your off-season adventures, and plans for the upcoming season.
  • Our first on water cruise is the “Shake Down Cruise”. After being on the hard during the off season, this is a great opportunity to ensure all systems are ship shape for the season ahead. This is typically a short overnight trip to a neighboring yacht club or marina. This offers an opportunity to take your yacht out on its initial voyage of the season with the company and safety of several other yachts. We then enjoy dinner & drinks and the camaraderie of old and new friends. The next Day we sail back to our home port, again with the company and safety of several other yachts. A typical trip would be to the RCYC, or the RYC. Special Note, as this is a local trip, for captains in which their yacht may not be ready, or for the clubs' social members, you can drive to our destination and join the group for dinner and drinks.
  • Short Cruise to Long Island Sound (LIS): This cruise is the perfect opportunity for newer captains to gain experience going into New York Harbor, up the east river, through hell gate, and into LIS. As LIS offers so many exceptional sailing opportunities for a lifetime of sailing adventures, it’s critical for new sailors to gain the confidence to make this journey. This cruise is a great steppingstone for our other longer cruises the Club takes into LIS. This is also a great trip for well-seasoned captains looking to enjoy more time on the water, and to share their experience/knowledge with others.
  • Cruise to Shelter Island/Block Island: This trip checks all the boxes. If you would like to sail within LIS (inside route) or prefer an offshore passage (outside route) to Block Island, this cruise is for you. This is typically an extended trip of about 2 weeks or a little more. However, if you have time restrictions and prefer a trip of up to 2 weeks you can take the cruise to Shelter Island. Based upon the participation of the clubs members we can adjust the trips to best accommodate the majority of captains. As always, captains are free to join the parts of the trip they desire and then go off on their own to other destinations of their choosing and then rejoin the group as/if desired. So please sign up early and let us know your preferences so we can plan accordingly.
  • Hudson River cruise towards the end of the season to enjoy the incredible scenery we are so lucky to have within our reach, and a great way to bring the season to a majestic close.
  • Various Raft Ups (just outside our marina, or at Horseshoe Cove, etc.), as well as other local cruises.
  • Various other day cruises or cruises of 2 to 3 days based upon member desires for the season.
  • Several off-season land-based trips are also planned each year, which is a great way to stay connected to your new and old AHYC friends.
  • We also request all members to inform the Yachting/Cruising Committee of individual trips/events you are planning if you are interested in having other cruising members join along. These could be of any duration/destination, even if it’s just anchoring for a day or overnight at Horseshoe cove or at a local Yacht Club.
