Cruise Outside to Block Island
Tired or bored of hopping up Long Island Sound to get to your vacation on Block Island, or beyond? Join us in sailing “outside” to Block Island this summer! We’ve now done this for two summers, joined last year by two other AHYC boats which made the trip a lot more fun – both the sail and the socializing on Block after we arrived.
We have now twice sailed Tehani outside to Block Island. The first year, joined by three stout club members, we departed just after noon, watched the sunset while off Fire Island and the sunrise off Montauk, and arrived in the Great Salt Pond before noon the next day. Meanwhile, Patti (and Hobie!) drove to Pt. Judith. My crew took the ferry to Pt. Judith, met Patti and then drove our car back to Atlantic Highlands. And of course, Patti (and Hobie!) took the ferry over to Block Island, where we started our vacation with a three- or four-day head start. And our car was waiting for us when we returned to Atlantic Highlands!
Having four of us makes standing two watches of two people each easy, but lesser numbers work just fine. We keep about two miles off the coast of Long Island to avoid most fishing traffic. It’ss a great trip!
This year, we’re planning on doing the same trip, departing on Thursday, August 9, weather permitting, of course. This a Club Cruise, sponsored by the Yachting Committee to encourage boats who may be hesitant to sail overnight. It’s great fun to sail as a group, and of course we’re there for each other in case of need or emergency. (Tehani and others have radar in case of fog.) Once we arrive, there will be no further organized activities – you’re on your own.
Before we depart, we’ll have a short gathering to discuss detailed plans and share experience and hints. If this will be your first overnight sail, it’s a great way to start!
